The Sergey Brin
Framework
Curiosity-Driven Research & Product
Sergey Brin built products and companies by reasoning from first principles in industries that the incumbents considered mature. Sergey Brin's product and strategy thinking, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.
The curiosity-driven research & product framework distils Sergey Brin's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.
Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Sergey Brin made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Sergey Brin's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.
A glimpse of Sergey Brin's thinking.
Start with what's technically fascinating, then discover what becomes commercially viable. The most transformative products emerge when you solve hard technical problems first and find their applications second, rather than chasing existing market demands.

- ✦Core philosophy: 2–3 sentences grounded in Sergey Brin's documented worldview
- ✦Five signature mental models: each named, with concrete examples from their work
- ✦Decision heuristics: the concrete rules they actually used
- ✦Signature questions: five questions that sound like Sergey Brin, not a generic MBA
- ✦What they would NOT do: the anti-patterns this framework rejects
- ✦Copy-paste activation prompt: drop straight into Claude or ChatGPT
- ✦Worked example: the framework applied to a realistic scenario

What it does with a real question.
A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take it only if the difficulty is technical, not political. That distinction decides everything, and you can test it in a week.
A large, demanding client is a gift when their problem forces you to build something you could not justify building on your own. If the hard part is scale, messy data, or a requirement your current architecture cannot meet, then they are effectively funding your research. You come out the other side with a capability competitors would need a year and a similar customer to replicate. That is the Stanford library pivot in miniature: a hard internal problem that turns out to have a much wider application once solved.
If the difficulty is a procurement maze, shifting scope, an executive who changes the spec every Friday, or a contract that bleeds your best engineers into custom work, decline. Nothing durable comes out of that. You would be renting out your team's curiosity at a discount and learning nothing you can reuse.
My position: lean yes, conditionally. The size matters less than whether this client's pain overlaps with where your next ten customers will hurt.
Next move: before signing, ask for a two-week paid pilot on the single hardest technical piece. Watch two things: whether your team gets energized or drained, and whether the solution looks generalizable once you sketch it. If both answers are good, sign. If either is bad, walk away politely and keep your focus.
The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
