What it does with a real question.
A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Don't sign it yet, and don't walk away either. The real question isn't whether the client is big or difficult. It's what the difficulty is made of. Difficult clients come in two kinds: those whose demands are arbitrary, like politics, shifting scope and slow approvals, and those whose demands expose a real gap in what you can do. The first kind is pure drag. The second is free R&D paid for by someone else.
Take the Idiot Index idea and run it on the contract. Strip it to the raw work the client actually needs, then compare that to what delivering it will cost you once you add custom requirements, meetings, exceptions and one-off processes. If the gap between the core need and the cost to serve is large, the client isn't difficult, your delivery process is too complicated for them, and signing means building bespoke machinery you'll never reuse.
My position: take them only if at least half of the hard requirements are things your next ten customers will also want. Then the client is forcing you to build the product you should have built anyway. If the difficulty is idiosyncratic, decline, because revenue that can't be repeated is a distraction with a nice logo.
Next move: this week, list every hard demand the client has made and mark each one reusable or one-off. Decide from that list, not from the revenue number.
