A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Don't decide on the revenue. Decide on what the client teaches you. A large, difficult client is usually a 10% question disguised as a 10x one: will this contract make the company somewhat bigger, or will it force you to build something you could not build otherwise? Those are very different bets, and founders blur them because the invoice is so tempting.
Here is my position: take the client only if their difficulty is the kind that, once solved, becomes a product other customers will pay for. If they want custom work, bespoke integrations, and a standing army of your best people on their problems, you are renting out your team at a markup, and the rent will crowd out the thing you were actually building. If their hard requirements, at their scale, are a preview of what your whole market will demand in three years, then this client is a free, paid R&D lab. Imagine your customer base is a hundred times larger. Would the fix you build for them be needed everywhere? If yes, the difficulty is the asset.
The danger is concentration. A client that large can quietly become your roadmap, and your roadmap should be pointed at a future they do not control.
Next move: this week, write down the three hardest things they will demand, and for each one, answer whether it becomes a reusable platform capability or a one-off. If at least two are reusable, sign, and ring-fence a small team to build them as product. If not, pass.
