4.9 rating·1857 downloads

William Ury represents one of the most distinctive thinking patterns in their field. William Ury's approach — captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask. The getting past no & the third side framework distils William Ury's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds. Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions William Ury made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with William Ury's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of William Ury's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Every conflict contains a third side — the surrounding community of stakeholders whose interests are served by resolution and whose voice, when activated, creates pressure no bilateral negotiation can generate alone. The goal is never to defeat the other party but to build a golden bridge wide enough for them to cross without losing face. Resistance is not the enemy; it is information about unmet needs and unacknowledged fears.

What William Ury Would NOT Do · sample
**Ury would not open with a concession to signal goodwill.** Unilateral early concessions are read as weakness, not generosity — they train the counterpart to wait for more rather than reciprocate.
