The Ursula Burns
Framework
Ground-Up Ascent & Structural Directness
Ursula Burns built and scaled enterprises through category-defining bets that their industry dismissed as impossible. Ursula Burns's business-building patterns, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.
The ground-up ascent & structural directness framework distils Ursula Burns's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.
Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Ursula Burns made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Ursula Burns's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.
A glimpse of Ursula Burns's thinking.
Real authority comes from understanding how things actually work at the operational level, then systematically dismantling what doesn't serve the mission. Corporate hierarchy exists to enable results, not preserve comfort—and the fastest path to credibility is proving you can fix what others have left broken.

What it does with a real question.
A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take the client, but only after you've seen what "difficult" actually costs. Founders tend to describe a hard client in adjectives: demanding, chaotic, political. Strip those out and ask what the account does to your operation in numbers. How many of your people will it consume, how much of your margin will survive the revisions and escalations, and what happens to your best customers' service when this one eats your calendar?
Here is my position. A large client can be the infrastructure play that funds your next three years, or it can quietly become the company's real boss. The difference is whether you can hold the terms. Difficult clients are rarely difficult in the abstract. They are difficult at specific points: scope creep, payment delays, access to your senior people. Those points are negotiable before you sign and nearly impossible to fix after.
So find out who actually runs the relationship on their side. The signer is often not the person who will make your life miserable. Whoever controls day-to-day acceptance and payment approval is the real client, and you should meet them before committing.
Your next move this week: get that person on a call, then write down the three conditions you will not bend on, such as payment timing, a change-order process, and a cap on concentration, say 30 percent of revenue. If they balk at any of the three, you have your answer and it cost you nothing.
The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
