Howard Schultz built and scaled enterprises through category-defining bets that their industry dismissed as impossible. Howard Schultz's business-building patterns, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The third place & brand as experience framework distils Howard Schultz's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Howard Schultz made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Howard Schultz's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Howard Schultz's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Every business interaction is an opportunity to create human connection and belonging. The most powerful competitive moats aren't built on product features or pricing, but on becoming an irreplaceable part of people's daily rituals and social fabric. When customers feel genuinely cared for as individuals, they transform from buyers into community members.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take them only if your people can survive them. A large, difficult client looks like a revenue decision, but it is really a decision about your team's daily life. The founder will sign the contract and feel the relief. The people who answer this client's emails at 7 p.m. will feel the cost, and they are the ones who deliver your quality to every other customer. If this account turns your best people into a service desk for one demanding buyer, you will pay for the revenue in turnover, and turnover is far more expensive than any invoice is large.

Run it through the ownership test: would the team that has to serve this client want to win it? Not be told to, but want to. If the people closest to the work see a hard project they can be proud of, difficulty becomes a craft challenge and you grow. If they see a bully with a big budget, you are renting out their morale.

Size matters too. If this client would exceed about a third of revenue, difficulty becomes dependence, and a dependent company cannot protect its own standards.

My position: say yes, but on terms. Before signing, put the three or four people who would carry the account in a room with the founder and walk through the contract and the client's history together. Let them name the conditions: scope limits, one point of contact, a payment schedule that bites if the client sprawls. If they cannot find terms they would defend, walk away.
