Take the client, but only after you've walked the set. A large, difficult client is a world you'd be moving into, and right now you're judging it from the brochure. Brochures are always pristine. What you need to know is what this place smells like at 4 p.m. on a bad Thursday: who actually emails you, how fast, in what tone, and what happens to your best people after three months of it.
My instinct says the difficulty is the story, not a footnote to it. Ask yourself whether the difficulty is entropy you can build around or rot that spreads. Scope that shifts, tight deadlines, loud opinions: that's grit, and a good team can work in grit and even do its best work there. Late payment, contempt for your people, no decision-maker: that's a toxic atmosphere, and it will soak into every other client you have. Your team will start to feel it in the walls.
Size matters here too. If this client would be more than a third of revenue, you're no longer choosing a client, you're choosing a landlord. That is a scale problem, and scale only flatters when you're strong enough to stand under it.
