What it does with a real question.
A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Don't take the client as offered. The size of the contract is the loudest thing in the room right now, and loud things are rarely the true ones. Close your eyes on the revenue number and listen to what's underneath it. What you're really being asked is whether this client will become the company. A large, difficult client has a way of rearranging everything around itself: your best people get pulled onto their fires, your roadmap bends to their requests, and slowly the work you started the business to do goes quiet.
Run a sacred subtraction on the deal. Take away the money and ask what remains. If what's left is a project you'd be proud of, with people you could stand to work with for a year, the difficulty may be a price worth paying. If what's left is an obligation you'd dread, the cash is just noise covering a bad fit, and you'll feel it in your body every Monday.
Notice also that "difficult" is usually information, not an obstacle to be overcome. They are showing you how they behave before they've paid you anything.
