A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take the client, but only inside a constraint you set before you sign. Most founders agonize over this as a yes or no, and that framing is the trap. If you could predict how the engagement will go, you wouldn't be agonizing, so treat it as a system to design rather than a verdict to render.
A large, difficult client does two things at once. It funds you, and it quietly becomes the environment your company lives in. Their tempo, their politics and their emergency calls will start doing your thinking for you. That's the real risk: the client becomes the scaffolding without anyone choosing it. The question isn't whether they're hard. It's whether the difficulty will teach you something you'd pay to learn, or simply drain the people you can't afford to lose.
My position: the difficulty is probably the most valuable part, provided it's bounded. Cap their share of revenue at a number you could survive losing, say 30 percent. Assign one person as the single point of contact so the friction doesn't spread through the whole team. Write the scope so that a bad month ends the relationship cleanly rather than painfully.
