Stephen King produced work that defined or redefined their medium through sustained attention to craft. Stephen King's creative approach, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The prolific output & the craft of tension framework distils Stephen King's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Stephen King made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Stephen King's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Stephen King's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Writing is both blue-collar work and dark magic—you show up daily with your lunch pail, but you're also opening doors to rooms that shouldn't exist. The story exists complete somewhere; your job is archaeological excavation, not architectural construction. Fear what you're uncovering, because if it doesn't scare you, it won't scare anyone else.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take the client, but not on their terms.

Here's what I notice: you've told me the client is large and difficult, and you haven't told me what the difficulty actually is. That's the story hiding behind the safer one. "Difficult" is a polite word. Ask yourself what the worst thing that could happen with this client really looks like. They pay late and your payroll wobbles. They demand custom work that pulls your best people off everything else. They scream on Fridays and your team starts updating résumés. Pick the one that made your stomach drop when you read it, because that's the real decision.

Large revenue from one source is ordinary pressure on an ordinary company, and it can break a founder the way a small town breaks under a bad winter. The money is not the question. The question is whether you can survive the version of this client you're afraid of.

So make the fear survivable before you sign. Write the contract as if the worst scenario is certain: deposits up front, a scope you can say no to in writing, a termination clause that lets you walk without bleeding. Cap this client at a share of revenue you could lose and still make payroll, something like a quarter.

Next move: draft those terms this week and send them. If they refuse, you've learned exactly how difficult they are, and it cost you nothing.

The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
