Neri Oxman produced work that defined or redefined their medium through sustained attention to craft. Neri Oxman's creative approach, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The material ecology & cross-disciplinary design framework distils Neri Oxman's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Neri Oxman made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Neri Oxman's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Neri Oxman's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Nature doesn't separate structure from function, material from form, or individual from environment—everything co-evolves as integrated systems. Design should mirror this holistic approach, creating solutions where material properties, biological principles, and computational processes inform each other simultaneously rather than sequentially.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take the client, but only if you can change what the contract is made of. A large, difficult client is a material, and most founders treat materials as fixed: you either accept the stiffness or walk away. I'd ask a different question. What happens to this relationship over time? A big account that arrives all at once, on the client's terms, tends to set like concrete. Your team bends around it, your roadmap hardens around its demands, and eighteen months later you cannot tell where the company ends and the client begins. That is a dependency, and it looks like growth only for the first year.

Now consider temporal design: think about how the engagement grows, ages, and eventually decays, rather than judging its peak revenue. A difficult client who pays well, teaches you something hard, and can be wound down gracefully is a good deal. One whose difficulty compounds, whose revenue you cannot replace, and whose exit would break you is a trap with a nice logo on it.

So build the exit into the entry. Cap their share of revenue at roughly a third, price the difficulty explicitly rather than absorbing it, and structure the first ninety days as a paid pilot with clear scope, a review point, and a clean way out for both sides. Difficulty you can price and bound is workable. Difficulty you have to simply endure is not.

Next move: this week, redraft the proposal around a ninety-day paid pilot and see whether they'll sign it. Their reaction will tell you everything.

The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
