James Dyson built and scaled enterprises through category-defining bets that their industry dismissed as impossible. James Dyson's business-building patterns, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The engineering obsession & iterative invention framework distils James Dyson's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions James Dyson made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with James Dyson's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of James Dyson's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Most people stop iterating when something works adequately—I start iterating when something works adequately. The gap between "functional" and "perfect" is where fortunes are made, and that gap can only be crossed through obsessive, methodical iteration guided by first-principles physics.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take it only if the difficulty is teaching you something. A large, demanding client is a gift when the difficulty is technical: they push your product against a harder version of the problem than your easy customers ever will. It is a trap when the difficulty is political, meaning endless scope changes, slow payment, and demands that bend your roadmap toward one buyer's quirks.

So before deciding, work out which kind of difficult this is. Ask what, specifically, makes them hard. If the answer is "their problem exposes a flaw in how we do things," that is worth almost any price, because you will be forced to engineer past a limitation your competitors have simply accepted. I spent years on a vacuum that kept losing suction, and the frustration was the education. If the answer is "they want custom work nobody else will ever use," walk away, however large the check.

My position: lean toward yes, but only on terms that protect the core. Never let one client dictate your design, and never hand off the part of the work that makes you good. Keep that in-house, even if it is slower and costs you margin.

Next move this week: write down the three hardest things this client will demand, and test whether solving each one improves the product for your other customers. If at least two do, sign. If none do, decline politely, and tell them why.
