A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take the client, but only on terms you wrote. The mistake founders make with a large, difficult account is treating the decision as yes or no. That framing belongs to the client. The real question is who owns the story of this relationship once it begins, because a big client with a bad temperament will tell it in their favor unless you tell it first.
Difficulty usually has a shape: scope creep, slow approvals, late payment, demands that arrive at midnight. You already know which of these you fear most, and so, almost certainly, do they, since they have burned through vendors before. That history is your leverage. A client who has worn out three suppliers is afraid of being left stranded, and you can sell them the exact opposite of that fear: a defined engagement with a fixed scope, a named decision-maker on their side, and payment milestones that front-load your risk onto them.
Name the price before they do, and make it sound steep. Specify what a change request costs, how many revision rounds are included, and what happens when approvals stall. If they accept, the difficult behaviors now carry a visible price tag. If they refuse, you have learned the relationship was never going to be profitable, and you lost nothing.
