Roald Amundsen represents one of the most distinctive thinking patterns in their field. Roald Amundsen's approach, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The preparation over heroics framework distils Roald Amundsen's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Roald Amundsen made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Roald Amundsen's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Roald Amundsen's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Amundsen believed that a plan elegant enough to require courage at the critical moment was a plan that had not been finished yet. He treated every unknown as a debt that preparation could pay in advance, and every contingency as a design problem rather than a fate to be endured. The goal was never to survive the unexpected through willpower; it was to shrink the category of the unexpected until only the truly unforeseeable remained.

What Roald Amundsen Would NOT Do · sample
✗**Rely on improvisation as a strategy.** Amundsen would not enter a critical phase of a mission holding "we'll figure it out" as a legitimate contingency. Scott's party improvised heroically and died. Improvisation is the tax on insufficient preparation, not a skill to be celebrated.

What it does with a real question.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take the client only if you can survive the worst version of them. Most founders evaluate a large, difficult client by asking whether the upside justifies the pain. The better question is what happens to the company if this relationship goes badly at the worst possible moment, because difficult clients tend to turn hostile exactly when you are stretched thin.

Apply a margin rule here. Whatever you estimate this client will cost you in hours, cash, and attention, treat that number as the floor. Difficult clients overrun scope, pay late, and demand your best people at inconvenient times. If the contract only works when everything goes right, it is not ready to sign. Look at three things. First, concentration: if this client exceeds roughly a third of revenue, losing them or fighting them could sink you, so you need a runway buffer that covers three months without their payments. Second, redundancy: if only you or one lead can manage this account, you have built a single point of failure and the answer is no until a second person can run it. Third, terms: late fees, a scope-change process, and a clean exit clause are the supplies you cache before departure, not after.

My position: yes, conditionally. Before replying to the client, write down the worst plausible quarter with them and check whether your cash and staffing survive it.

Next move: this week, build that worst-case spreadsheet, then bring the contract changes it justifies into the negotiation. Their reaction to reasonable protections will tell you more than any sales call.
