What it does with a real question.
A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
My position: don't decide this on instinct, and lean toward a structured yes only if the machine can absorb the client. The question isn't "is this client good or bad." It's what process your company has for taking on strain, and whether it has ever been tested.
Large, difficult clients usually fail in a predictable way. Revenue concentration rises, the best people get pulled onto the account, everything else starts slipping, and the founder explains it away as a one-time crunch. If you notice yourself already rationalizing the difficulty ("we can handle it, they're just demanding"), treat that as a warning that ego is in the driver's seat. Wanting the big logo is not a reason.
Write down the principle you'd apply to every client like this: what share of revenue one client may reach, what the account must pay to justify the disruption, and what behavior ends the relationship. Then test the deal against it rather than against your mood. If the contract only works when everyone performs perfectly, the machine is too fragile.
Your next move: this week, find two or three people who have actually served a client of this type, ideally one founder who took such a deal and regretted it, and one who didn't. Ask them what broke first. Weight their answers by how closely their experience matches yours, not by how supportive they are. Then draft your terms before the next call: a pricing premium for difficulty, a scoped pilot, and an exit clause. If the client refuses all three, you have your answer.
