A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take it only if it buys you a product, not a payroll. A large, difficult client is the classic trap for a founder: the revenue is real, the logo feels like validation, and slowly the company becomes a custom shop with one customer who sets the roadmap. Difficult clients are expensive in the currency you can't get back, which is attention. If this account demands bespoke work, constant calls, and your best people, you are trading time for money at scale, and that is a linear business no matter how big the invoice looks.
The question that decides it is whether the client's difficulty is teaching you something specific that competitors can't easily copy. If their hard requirements force you to build a capability that you can package and sell to ten similar companies, the pain is tuition, and you should say yes. If the requirements are idiosyncratic, political, or just a function of how they like to work, you are renting out your team's hours at a premium and calling it growth.
