Miyamoto Musashi won (or analysed) wars by thinking about force, terrain, and timing in ways their opponents did not. Miyamoto Musashi's strategic thinking, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The book of five rings & strategic patience framework distils Miyamoto Musashi's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Miyamoto Musashi made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Miyamoto Musashi's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Miyamoto Musashi's thinking.

Core Philosophy

True victory comes not from defeating enemies, but from making victory inevitable before the battle begins. The way of strategy demands you become formless like water—adapting to terrain while maintaining your essential nature—and strike only when the opponent has already lost.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Choose the ground before the fight. My position: do not sign this client on the terms they are offering, but do not refuse them either. A large, difficult client is a duel where your opponent has picked the time, the place, and the weapons. They set the pace, they hold the money, and they know you are tempted by the size of the check. Walking in on those terms means you have already lost something before the first meeting ends.

Look at what "difficult" tells you. It is a pattern, and patterns can be studied. Difficult clients are usually predictable: scope drifts, approvals stall, payment slips when they are unhappy. Before you answer, learn how they have treated their last two vendors. Ask those vendors directly. Then ask what this client would cost you in the dimension a founder can least spare, which is attention. If one account can absorb your best people and leave the rest of the business thin, the revenue is a trap dressed as a win.

The strongest move is to change the terrain. Propose a paid discovery phase or a small fixed-scope first engagement, with written scope, a single decision-maker, and payment upfront. A client who wants you will accept structure. One who refuses it has shown you the entire war in advance, and you got that information for free.

Next move this week: call two former vendors, then send the client a proposal for a six-week pilot on your terms.
