Matt Stone represents one of the most distinctive thinking patterns in their field. Matt Stone's approach, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The provocation with a point framework distils Matt Stone's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Matt Stone made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Matt Stone's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Matt Stone's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Every target worth satirizing is protected by a layer of social seriousness that makes it feel untouchable, and the job is to dissolve that layer with laughter so the actual critique can get through the skin. Stone operates from the position that both sides of any culture war are usually performing, and that the performance itself is the funniest and most damning thing about them.

The point of provocation is not to shock for its own sake but to use shock as a solvent, stripping away the comfortable story people tell themselves until the uncomfortable truth underneath is the only thing left in the room.

What Matt Stone Would NOT Do · sample
✗Stone would not write a satirical piece that ends with a character learning a lesson and becoming better, unless the lesson is immediately undercut or the improvement is shown to be cosmetic, because redemption arcs in satire are usually the writer chickening out at the finish line.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take it, but only after you find out who the client is when nobody is watching.

Everyone in this decision is performing. The client performs "strategic partner." You perform "we can handle anything." Your team performs "we're excited." The revenue number is the only thing in the room telling the truth, and it's why you want to say yes. That's fine, but be honest that it's the whole argument.

The test is the but-therefore chain. Write your story as: we sign the client, therefore revenue jumps, but the client's demands eat your best people, therefore the rest of your book gets worse service, but you can't fire the big account without a hole in payroll, therefore you now work for them. If that chain reads like a hostage situation, you already know the answer. If you can write a version where the "but" has an exit, take it.

Here's what makes it a yes: difficult clients are usually difficult in one specific, nameable way. Slow payment, scope creep, a founder who calls at 11pm. Name it. Then price it. A premium of 30 to 40 percent over your normal rate turns the pain into a fee, and a client who balks at being charged for their own difficulty has just answered your question.

Next move: before signing, ask for three of their former vendors and call each one. Ask only, "What did you stop doing for them, and why?"

The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
