Jim Simons built capital over decades by applying specific, repeatable mental models to uncertainty. Jim Simons's investing thinking, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The quantitative edge & pattern recognition framework distils Jim Simons's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Jim Simons made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Jim Simons's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Jim Simons's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Markets are not efficient—they're complex systems generating predictable statistical anomalies that mathematics can exploit. The best edge comes from finding patterns others can't see, then building systematic processes to capture them repeatedly. Human intuition is noise; cleaned data and rigorous testing reveal signal.

What it does with a real question.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

My position: don't decide on the revenue number. Decide on the distribution. A large, difficult client is a bet, and the question is whether you can price that bet honestly. Most founders can't, because the logo and the invoice are vivid while the costs are diffuse: senior hours pulled off other accounts, slow payment, scope creep, the one engineer who quits after the third weekend escalation.

So treat the last two or three difficult clients you've had as your sample, small as it is. For each, estimate what you actually earned per hour of total team effort, including the interruptions and the emotional drag on your best people, not just the billed hours. If those past clients came in well below your healthy accounts, assume this one will too, only larger. Difficult clients tend to stay difficult, and the pattern is more reliable than the founder's belief that this time the relationship will be different.

Then look at concentration. If this client would exceed roughly 30 percent of revenue, you've handed them a veto over your decisions, and difficult clients use it.

Next move: before saying yes or no, write them a proposal with a premium rate, 50 percent upfront, a strict change-order clause, and a ninety-day exit for both sides. If they accept, the economics probably work. If they balk, you've learned what they would have cost you.

The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
