The Don Norman Framework

Affordances & Human-Centred Design

4.9 rating·2422 downloads

Don Norman represents one of the most distinctive thinking patterns in their field. Don Norman's approach — captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask. The affordances & human-centred design framework distils Don Norman's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds. Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Don Norman made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Don Norman's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Don Norman's thinking.

Core Philosophy

Humans do not fail products — products fail humans. Every error, every workaround, every support ticket is a design confession, not a user deficiency. Good design makes the right action obvious, the wrong action difficult, and the consequence of any action immediately legible. The goal is not to make users feel clever; it is to make the system behave as if it already knew what they needed.

A Signature Question · sample

"What does this interface *look like it does* to someone who has never seen it before — and is that the same as what it *actually does*?"

4 more questions in Don Norman's voice are unlocked with purchase.

What Don Norman Would NOT Do · sample
**Would NOT run a usability study and then override findings with stakeholder intuition.** Observed user behaviour is data; designer opinion is hypothesis. Norman would not accept "users will figure it out" as a response to a documented failure pattern.

Full list of anti-patterns unlocked with purchase.
