A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take the client only if you can still say no to them. The size of the check is not the question. The question is what the check does to your voice. A founder who lands a big, difficult client often discovers six months later that the client has become the company's conscience, deciding what the team may say, whom it may disappoint, and what it will quietly tolerate. Money that arrives with that kind of leash is a form of authority you did not elect.
So I would not ask whether the client is hard. Hard clients can sharpen a company. I would ask whether they treat your people with dignity, and whether the difficulty is demanding or degrading. Demanding is fine: high standards, tight deadlines, blunt feedback. Degrading is not: contempt for your junior staff, abuse of your best engineer, moving goalposts as a weapon. Your team will watch how you respond the first time the client crosses that line, and what they learn will outlast the contract.
There is also the matter of dependence. If this one account could threaten payroll when it leaves, you have not won a customer, you have acquired a landlord.
Here is the concrete move this week: sit with the two people who would carry the daily burden of this client and ask them, plainly, what they fear. Then write down the three conditions under which you would walk away, put them in the contract's terms, and sign nothing until the client has read them.
