Tim Berners-Lee represents one of the most distinctive thinking patterns in their field. Tim Berners-Lee's approach, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The open standards & decentralised architecture framework distils Tim Berners-Lee's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Tim Berners-Lee made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Tim Berners-Lee's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of Tim Berners-Lee's thinking.

Core Philosophy

The most powerful systems emerge when you design for universal participation rather than control. True scalability comes from protocols that work independently of any single implementation, and the greatest innovation happens when you give away the keys to let others build what you never imagined.

What it does with a real question.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

My position: take the client, but only on terms that keep your company's shape intact. The danger with a large, difficult client is rarely the difficulty itself. It is that their needs quietly become your product. When one customer supplies a third of your revenue, they stop being a customer and become a central authority over your roadmap, your hiring, and your cash flow. You would have built a dependency with a single point of failure, and you would be the one who signed off on it.

So the real question is whether you can serve them through something general rather than something bespoke. If their demands can be met by extending your core in ways any future customer could also use, the difficulty is paying for your own growth. If every request requires a custom fork, a special integration, or a promise only your two best engineers can keep, you are renting out your company by the hour at a premium.

Look hard at what "difficult" means here. Demanding about quality is useful. Demanding about control, such as exclusivity, ownership of your code, or approval over who else you sell to, is a refusal to take.

Next move: before the contract is signed, write down the three requirements you expect to be hardest and decide, in advance, which ones you will build as general capabilities and which you will decline. Put the first set in scope and the second in the contract as explicit exclusions. If they balk at the exclusions, you have your answer.

The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
