The Michael Phelps
Framework
Visualization & Obsessive Preparation
Michael Phelps reached elite levels through a daily practice of deliberate self-measurement and refusal to accept the ceiling. Michael Phelps's performance thinking, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.
The visualization & obsessive preparation framework distils Michael Phelps's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.
Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions Michael Phelps made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with Michael Phelps's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.
A glimpse of Michael Phelps's thinking.
Every race is won in your mind before you touch the water. Perfect practice creates automatic responses that function even when your conscious mind shuts down under pressure. Visualization isn't daydreaming—it's neurological programming through obsessive mental repetition.

What it does with a real question.
A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take it, but only after you've rehearsed the worst version of it. The size of the client isn't your real question. Your real question is whether your company can execute under pressure it has never felt, and right now you're guessing.
Here's how I'd test that. Sit down and visualize month three of this engagement in full detail: the Friday evening escalation, the scope change nobody documented, the key engineer quitting mid-project, the invoice paid sixty days late while payroll is due. Don't skim it. Watch each scene play out and note exactly who does what, with what authority, and what it costs you. Most founders only picture the signing ceremony and the revenue line. The client's difficulty will arrive in specifics, so your preparation has to be specific too.
If you can walk through those scenes and see a calm, rehearsed response for each, the client is an upgrade. If you keep hitting moments where the honest answer is "I'd improvise and hope," then you aren't ready, and saying yes would be gambling with your payroll.
Your next move this week: write down the five ugliest scenarios, draft your response to each, and build the answers into the contract itself: payment terms, change-order process, a named escalation contact. Then sit across from them and watch how they respond to those terms. Their reaction will tell you more than any pitch meeting.
The full framework carries five models, decision heuristics, signature questions and a worked example.
