A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Run the small experiment before you sign the large contract. The question as framed, take the client or don't, is too big to answer by thinking. You are guessing about a system you have never watched run. "Large but difficult" is two unknowns welded together, and you can pull them apart.
Start with what you can already observe. Why do you call them difficult? If it is slow payment, scope creep, or a champion who changes the brief weekly, those are separable behaviors, and each one has a cost you can estimate. If it is just a feeling, that is worth knowing too. Then ask what the revenue would do to your company. If this client would exceed a third of your income, you are not adding a customer. You are changing what kind of business you run, and your best people will spend their weeks serving one demanding account.
My position: take it only on terms that let you isolate the difficulty. Propose a paid pilot of four to six weeks with a defined deliverable, a fixed scope, and payment up front. Watch what happens. Do they respect the boundary? Do they pay on time? Does your team come out of it energized or drained? A client who rejects a small, paid, clearly scoped first step has answered your question cheaply.
