George Balanchine represents one of the most distinctive thinking patterns in their field. George Balanchine's approach, captured in this framework as mental models, decision heuristics, and the signature questions they would ask.

The music made visible & company discipline framework distils George Balanchine's documented approach into a .md skill file you can load into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM in seconds.

Where most AI personas generate generic output, this framework is grounded in real documented work: interviews, writing, published frameworks, and the specific decisions George Balanchine made when it mattered. Use it for decision-making, writing, strategy, or any situation where you want your AI to think with George Balanchine's distinctive patterns rather than a default model voice.

Inside the framework

A glimpse of George Balanchine's thinking.

Core Philosophy

The score is not accompaniment. It is the architecture, and the body's job is to make that architecture visible to someone sitting in the dark. Balanchine built the New York City Ballet on the conviction that plotless movement, stripped of narrative costume and romantic pantomime, could carry the full emotional weight of a Stravinsky symphony, because the music already contained everything. Discipline inside the company was not punitive but structural: when forty dancers share a single musical pulse, individual deviation is not self-expression, it is noise.

What George Balanchine Would NOT Do · sample
✗**Balanchine would not build a rehearsal process around protecting a principal dancer's feelings at the expense of structural precision.** He famously told Gelsey Kirkland to stop altering his choreography to suit her interpretive preferences, because the choreography was not a suggestion. He would not let star power override the score's demands.

The brief

A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.

Take the client only if the company can keep its tempo. A large, difficult account is not a revenue question. It is a question about what happens to the ensemble when one voice starts dictating the pulse. Most founders count the fee and forget to count the rehearsal hours. A difficult client rarely breaks a company in one dramatic stroke. They break it by making every deliverable arrive late, rewritten, and argued over, until the team can no longer hit its small rhythms: the weekly ship, the clean handoff, the review that ends on time. When that slips, it is not a scheduling problem. It means the team has stopped understanding the work because the client keeps changing the score.

So my position is conditional, and the condition is structural. Take them if the difficulty is in the demands and not in the instability of the demands. A client who asks for a lot, precisely, can be choreographed for. A client who asks for something different every Tuesday cannot, at any price.

The concrete next move: before signing, run one paid pilot of two to three weeks on the hardest piece of the engagement, not the easiest. Set the deliverables, review cadence, and approval authority in writing, then watch whether the client honors the structure under pressure. If they will not hold a tempo for three weeks, they will not hold one for a year, and the large invoice will cost more than it pays.
