A founder is deciding whether to take a large but difficult client.
Take it only if you can state, in advance, what failure looks like. "Difficult" is the word hiding the real problem. It could mean demanding, slow to pay, scope-shifting, or genuinely hard work. Those are different machines with different failure modes, and you are currently treating them as one fog.
So reduce it. Strip the decision to its mechanical parts: what does this client consume from you each week (hours, senior attention, cash float), and what does it produce (revenue, reputation, learning)? Then ask which states the engagement can move through. Honeymoon, scope creep, late payment, escalation, exit. For each transition, write the trigger and your response. If you cannot name the exit condition, you are not evaluating a client, you are volunteering for an open-ended process with no halting rule.
My position: large clients become dangerous when they exceed roughly a third of revenue, because then you can no longer refuse their requests. Difficulty you can price is acceptable. Difficulty that removes your ability to say no is not.
Concrete next move this week: draft the contract terms you would need to make this survivable. A paid discovery phase, milestone-based payments, a scope-change clause, and a termination right with a notice period. Send them before any further negotiation. Their reaction is your test.
